An Audience with Ralph Rolle
05/08/2018 review by Derrick Thomas
Ralph’s theme for this masterclass was ‘How To Get And Keep A Gig’. He shared over 40 years of experience working as a professional drummer, discussing the very beginnings of his career sharing stories about how he came to work with an unsigned D’Angelo, living underneath Afrika Bambataa & the beginning’s of hip hop, what it was like playing with Roberta Flak, Sting, LL Cool J, Biggie Smalls, Paul Simon, Lady Gaga & numerous others right through to the current day and how he landed the gig with Nile Rodgers & Chic.
As well as practice advice, playing tips, helpful pointers with personal development and discussing in great detail how to get but crucially how to keep a gig and/or maintain a career as a successful working musician, Ralph also played using backing tracks to demonstrate some of his approach to playing for the music, and discussed the importance of developing a good time feel, hard work and practice, and the ability to play the right parts regardless of the level of gig or artist. Something he highlighted was the benefit of being able to do good backing vocals as a drummer, giving examples of good exercises to practice and finishing it all off by singing and performing David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’, which was originally produced by Nile Rodgers and featured a guitar solo from the great Stevie Ray Vaughan and which Ralph actually sings in the live show with Nile Rodgers and Chic.
The event was enjoyed by over 40 people from the South of England, the Nederland’s, Turkey and Poland, ranging in age from 4 years old to 83 years old and made up of a broad mixture of music students, music lovers, amateur professionals, established professionals and fans of some of the artists that Ralph has played with over the years.
Pat Garvey put on a great event in association with Master Study Studios, it reminded me very much of what a chap called Phil Solomon used to do but with a very modern twist and an approach to inspiration and education that with Pat’s expertise - not only as a new breed of educator but also as a highly trained, accomplished and respected musician - puts him in a very small group of people in the UK.
